Today's Story:

The Cholera Epidemic During the Irish Potato Famine and Its Impact on Canada

Excerpt from today's story

This island in the Saint Lawrence River was designated as a quarantine center. The Irish immigrants during the 1845 - 1849 Great Potato Famine were detained here until they were designated healthy enough to continue their journey into North America. The Great Potato Famine brought many starving Irish to North American Shores, but it also brought with them a deadly disease that was a threat to all of North America. It brought with it Cholera and later Typhus.
